Madonna kicked off the erotic, raunchy trend in 1990 with her ground-breaking Justify My Love video.
Others have followed her lead, with the likes of Rihanna, Britney and Lady Gaga writhing around in next to nothing at every given opportunity.
Here’s a rundown of some of the raciest clips to date, in no particular order…
CHRISTINA AGUILERA – Dirrty
Directed by David LaChapelle, Christina’s “post-apocalyptic orgy” 2002 video served to alert the world to her raunchy new image.
And it did so with aplomb, prompting much controversy among the public – and even some of her peers – who found her highly-sexualised persona a step too far.
Despite the notoriety, her Dirrty promo was the one that made her a household name and helped her to become a mega-selling pop diva for years to come.
ERIC PRYDZ – Call On Me
Sitting in on a girls’ aerobics class is a popular male fantasy, and that’s exactly what dance star Eric tapped into with his famous Call On Me vid in 2004.
The clip features a group of Lycra-clad gym girls nailing a repertoire of sexually-provocative stretches while a sole male member drawls as he joins in.
Then-PM Tony Blair revealed he nearly fell off his rowing machine when he first watched the promo on TV.
MADONNA – Justify My Love
For much of the Eighties, Madonna had done little more risqué than flash her tummy in an ill-fitting jumper.
In 1990, she starred in a video so steamy, it was banned by MTV.
The film noir-style clip features the singer making love to a man on a bed in lacy lingerie, a topless dominatrix and S&M themes.
THE BELOVED – Sweet Harmony
Singer Jon Marsh mustn’t have known where to look while he was shooting this promo – alongside a vast bevy of naked beauties.
TV star Tess Daly was among the starkers sirens who were miming the song’s words with an equally-undressed Jon.
The 1993 video gained notoriety for its nudity and helped the song peak at No8 in the UK singles chart – the band’s highest entry.
RIHANNA – Umbrella
Long before Rihanna was infuriating farmers by getting her boobs out on their land, she was making flesh-flashing videos like this one.
Umbrella was the song that made her a global sensation, and the accompanying promo worked wonders for her sex appeal.
It features Rihanna writhing around in the rain and throwing naked body shapes while coated in shimmering body paint.
LADY GAGA – Born This Way
You’d be hard pushed to find Lady Gaga fully-clothed in any scenes from her back catalogue of videos.
But she pushed the boat out for her 2011 Born This Way promo, which featured the singer spreading her legs and giving birth to a new race.
She also danced erotically in leather undies, frequently touched herself in a suggestive manner and rubbed flesh with frisky men and women.
HOLLY VALANCE – Kiss Kiss
The Australian beauty made quite an impression with her 2001 debut pop video as she set about burying memories of her Neighbours past.
Her remake of Turkish singer Tarkan’s tune Simarik shot to No1 in the UK, but it was the song’s promo that prompted repeat plays.
Holly appeared apparently naked in the short, with strategically-positioned lights protecting her modesty.
SHAKIRA – Don’t Bother
Even if you Don’t Bother downloading the single, the Columbian hottie’s video is certainly worth a look.
It sees Shakira seemingly turned on by her sleeping boyfriend and aroused as she sits solo in the front seat of his classic car.
For added measure, the singer’s lacy bra and toned legs are on display for much of the 2005 clip.
T.A.T.U. – All The Things She Said
Billed as a lesbian duo from Russia, singers Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova were assigned to play up to their titillating reputation in the vid to their debut UK single.
Dressed in Catholic school uniforms, the girls are shown dancing in the rain and snow before sharing an intimate kiss behind a chain fence as a crowd looks on.
Three years after the single’s 2002 release, Yulia announced she was pregnant – leading critics to dismiss t.A.T.u. as a fake gimmick.
BENNY BENASSI – Satisfaction
Eurodance maestro Benny famously sexed-up power tools in his jaw-dropping 2003 promo.
He played with stereotypes in the clip, enlisting a group of models to demonstrate how to use such manly appliances such as a pneumatic drill, a belt sander and an angle grinder.
All of the females used the tools in a seductive, sexy manner while dressed in revealing cleavage-flaunting scraps of clothes.
JENNIFER LOPEZ – I’m Glad
The Latina lovely ensured her bendy body took centre stage as she recreated a famous scene from Eighties flick Flashdance in this 2003 promo.
Close-up shots of her torso are peppered throughout the clip before she wows a panel of judges with her eye-watering routine.
Following the video’s release, Jen was sued by the woman who inspired the original 1983 film – but the case was thrown out in 2006.
CHRIS ISAAK – Wicked Game
The American singer became the envy of many a man when he rolled around on a beach with naked model Helena Christensen in 1991.
The catwalk queen played Chris’ love interest in the short, whispering into his ear and embracing him in the buff throughout the clip.
Originally released in 1989, Wicked Game went on to become the singer’s biggest ever hit.
